THE ASHHURST MEETING. ZIRCON WINS THE CUP. By Telegnfoh.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. The annual meeting of the Ashhurst-Pohan-glna Racing Club was held to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance. The track was in splendid order and there was excellent racing. Dissertation, the choice for the cup, was in front at the distance, but failed to finish on. Merry Day was badly placed in the last half and finished behind Zircon, who had a good run. Civilform won the sprint in good style. The totalisator handled £18,453, against £15,821 last year, an Increase of £2632. Results:—

HURDLES.—Malingerer (Copestake) 1, Watmatao 2, Ethiopian 3. Also started: Ruddy, Whizz Bang, Woden, Noble, Eldcnholm, Lady Wltchet, Punishment, Circulate, Big Gun. Won by a length, four lengths between second and third. Time, 2rnln. 46 3-ssec.

POHANGINA HANDICAP.—Ci vilform (M. McCarten) 1, Prince. Hal 2, Klkini 3. Also started: Morose, Canyon, Mark Time, Rose of Athens, Mountain March, Autounoana, Bestir. Civilform led into the straight and won easily by a lengthy the same distance between second and third. Time, Imin. 13 4-ssec.

FLYING HANDlCAP.—Magistrate (L. Berry) 1, Eonmark 2, BOnecto 3. Also started: Zany, Solrino, Hytinus, Bonny Nurse, Believe, Good Mark, Bonny Gold. Eonmark led into the straight, but Magistrate finished fast and won by a length, with half a length between second and third. Time, Imin. 14 4-ssec.

HANDlCAP.—Prtijector (L. A. Pine) 1, Suspicion 2, Kilbird 3. Also started: Soldier’s Love, Redlogue, Merry Queen, Waipatu, Vitella, Five Eighths, Satin, March On, Sleeping Beauty. The winner led all the way and won easily by two lengths, half a length between second and third. Time, Imin. 28 4-ssec.

MAIDEN HANDICAP.—PiIIage (Bagby) 1, Happy Days 2, Kllroe 3. Also started; Allmarhmba., Hecate, Dominant, Elixir. Peep o’ Day, Labour Morn, Bayana, Bouron, D’Aubepines, Whitirangi, Cairn, Treadwell, Bravato, Sensible. The winner led all the way and won nicely by a length. Happy Days finished fast and beat Kilroe bj- a length. Time, Imin. 2 l-ssec.

RAUMAI HANDlCAP.—Civilform (M. McCarten) 1, Prince Hal 2, Yankee Dan 3. Also started • Probate, Prince Martian, Mosthenes, Island. An exciting finish; won by a short head, a length and a half between second and third. Time, Imin. 27 2-ssec.

GORGE WELTER.—Blissfulness (H. Griffiths) 1, Fera 2, Redlogue 3. Also started: Comical, Kail, First Born, Slave Mart, Panache, Admiration, Merrlmas, Missrule, Deborah. Comical got a bad run and finished in the ruck. Fera led most of the way. Blissfulness came from a long way back and won nicely by a length, a length separating second and third. Time, Imin. 44sec.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire—From "Moturoa.”) Palmerston N.» Last Night. The Ashhurst races opened in fine but overcast weather, and the course was in guoa order. The attendance was large. Punters began well, selecting Malingerer for the Hack Hurdles, with Ruddy also well backed. Noble and Ruddy made the early running, but Malingerer went to the front five furlongs from home, followed by Walmatao, Malingerer lasting to win by less than a length. Ethiopian was a fair third and Lady Wltchet fourth. Morose was a strong order* In the Pohangina Handicap, and Kikini also had plenty of friends. Bestir was the quickest away and Was joined by Civilform at the end of two furlongs. Civilform led into the straight and won easily from Prince Hal, who finished fast. Klkini was a close third and Morose fourth. Miss Rene had most admirers in the Hack Flying. She drew number one and had every chance, but did not see it out. Eonmark led into the straight, but Magistrate finished best and won nicely. Good Mark appeared to finish third, but the judge placed Bonecto. Seven horses lined up for the Cup, Dissertation being most admired, and Merry Day and Zircon best of the others. All got away well except Bitters, who was badly left. The Speaker led Dissertation and Merry Day passing the stand, and along the back the order remained the same. Dissertation led into the straight, but was challenged by Merry Day. and then A Reed brought Zircon along with a nicely timed run. A great finish resulted in Zircon beating Merry Day by a lotig neck. Dissertation being a close third, and The Speaker, Makere, Bitters, and Paoanul followKllblrd, Waipatu. Redlogue and Vitella were the elect in the Komako Projector drew number one position, and the Hawera apprentice, L. Pihe, hopping him out first, won all the way. Suspicion and Kilbird were always second and third respectively, and Vitella finished fourth. Pillage, Dominant and Kilroe had most admirers in the Maiden. Pillage and Happy Days found their feet quickest and led Dominant to the turn. Pillage appeared be winning easily at the distance, but had to be shaken up to peat Happy Days. Kllroe was a good third, followed by Treadwell. Civilform was only raised 51bs. in the Raumai Welter, and nothing else would suit the public. Probate and Island led along tne back, with the favorite handy. Civilform took the lead at the turn and just lasted long enough to heat Prince Hal, Yankee Dan just beating Probate for third. Comical, with A. Oliver In the saddle, was fancied for the final event, but It was a good betting race. Slave Mart and Comical led past the stand, ard along the back Merrlmas, Fera and Blissfulness were prominent. Blissfulness and Fera came Into the straight together, and the former won easily by three parts of a length. Redlogue was a close third, followed by Merrlmas.

TROTTING. SECOND DAY AT OTAHUHU. Auckland, Last Night. The Otahuhu Trotting Club’s spring meeting concluded to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £48,794 10s, compared witii £48,488 10s last year, the total for the meeting being £104,977 10s, against £106,616 last year.
