FIRST DIRECT SHIPMENT. RECORD CARGO FOR POST PIRI2. . QUANTITY OF CHEESE INCLUDED. An important development in Taranaki's export trade will take place next week, when New Plymouth will be the final port of a steamer taking to England the largest cargo of meat tv*t shipped from Taranaki in one steamer. The vessel is the C. and D. liner Port I'iric, which arrived here from; Sydney direct last week, and which ia' making New Plymouth her oiily port of call in the Dominion. To see the port of New Plymouth become a final port of loading 1 I'or overseas liner* is the wish of exporters of Taranaki, and the actual achievement of. this object lor '.the first occasion will mark another step in tha progress of the province and tho'develop* ment of its port. The PorUjPMe is now scheduled to sail from* Npw iHy-t. mouth for England, via Australia, oa October 0, and it is understood that?' when she leaves New Plymouth aha will carry about 100,000 freight carcases, and a large quantity of cheese and other produce from the New Plymouth and Waitara works.

An additional 27,000 carcases, will ba added to the quota from the Smart Road works of the Taranaki Farmers' Company, making the total number of carcases to be shipped from these works 57,500. This will leave 70,000 .carcase# still in the stores, and a couple of shipments by other vessels shortly are anticipated. An increase in the amount to be lifted from Messrs. Borthwick and Sons' Waitara works has. alio been made, but details of this shipment were not available yesterday. The consignment of cheese from tha Taranaki Producers' works has bean increased from 8000 to. 12,000 crates, whila the balance of the season's oatpnt will be shipped to Wellington shortly to be loaded on the Port .Sydney. The Port Pirie's consignment thna constitutes a record one for tha port, easily eclipsing that taken by any former vessel. The average shipment of meat taken by any overseas vessel in the past has been in the vicinity of 20,000 carcases. This will also ba the first occasion on which cheese has baen shipped direct. As a freight carcase weighs 60 pounds, the total meat shipment will be about 2650 tons, occupying 300,000 cubic feet of space.

LEITREH FOR. WAITARA. , The liner Leitrim is due at Waitara roadstead about the end of this month' to load frozen meat. The vewijwill also take 0000 freight carcases froti the Taranaki Farmers' Smart Road wtaki. This has to be railed to Waitara. -The company recently protested to the Oyerseas Committee that this would Mean extra expense, but the committee has refused to alter its original arrangements.
