SOUTHLAND BEAT SOUTH CANTERBURY. By Telegraph.—Press Association: Invercargill, Last Night. A representative match, Southland v. South Canterbury, was played here to-day, resulting in the defeat of the visiting team by 31 points to 12. The ground was In good order, but a strong wind wade pWy somewhat difficult. In the second spoil Southland rattled on points, and were able to hold the lead, although South Canterbury made strong efforts during the second spell. NELSON BEATS WEST COAST. • Nelson, Last Night. At football, Nelson defeated West Coast by 21 points to 6. MOASCAR CUP DECISION. PROTEST JROM PAiMERSTON. Palmerston North, Lost Night. A special meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Union to-day discussed the referee's decision in the Moascar Cup final, and decided to forward a protest to the New Zealand Union as follows: "That as the ruling of tho referee that the kicking of the ball over the dead ball line by. the attacking side constituted <« force down, was contrary to the rules of Rugby, contrary to the special rules issued by the New Zealand Union for the control of the Moascar Cup competition, and contrary to the Interpretation, of the word force down agreed upon by Messrs. Colo, quboun and Stewart, managers of the respective teams, prior to the players taking the field, this Union protests against the match being awarded to Christchurch; and also suggests that the teams should be bracketed as co-winners of the Cup for the 1920 season." The Union, also decided' to invite Christchurch High School to play a friendly match with Palmerston North, here, on September 29 or October 2,. in order 'to test the superiority of the two teams. The Union offers to cover expenses, and also to make a substantial grant from the gate receipts.
