TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Meteorological, conditions for final gallops and for the Wanganui meeting, wfclch opens 10-day, have been the Teverse of propitious. (n fact, the weather has been "putrid." Considerable rain has fallen, and Scotch mist has damped and (almost) dispirited everybody, but at time of writing (noon on Wednesday) Ihe rain looks like lifting. There is only a moderate race .crowd, in Wanganui, but the afternoon and the morrow will see a steady flow of reinforcements, contingents from Taranaki, Wellington, Hawke's Bay and other n/rts being heralded.

The course the raini well, and a good drying wind is rapidly dispelling superfluous moisture. If the rain tolas off conditions for "racing will be ideal, though the lawns and enclosures are likely to be rather sodden. The electric totalisator is tuned up to the minute to tackle investments with speed and precision, and the fields will he uufHciently large to ensure spirited bettlngi Fresh totalisator figures and a successful meeting can sjifoly bs wagered upon. The gallops of the last two mornings have shed little light on to-day's "probabilities." Humbug, the; Guineas favorite, has not been asked to show his best paces, but if looks are to be relied upon he has come through a solid preparation. Hymestra continues to gallop attractively, as do Warraweo, Chimera, Simon, Crucelle, Trespass, Panache and Tenterfleld. The class of horses engaged h "first flight," and some good racing should be witnessed here on Thursday and Saturday. To-day's racing opens with the Durio Had: Handicap, six furlongs, and the. acceptors include Vasllkov, Crucello, Stutter, Farce, anS oiher good ones. On track form Crucelle (if started) and Farce should carry big money. Scratching* may reduce the field in the Maiden Race, six furlongs, but Tenterfleld, Cotalinl, and Voluble are expected to run well. Provided the going is good, Humbus will be a pronounced fay/trite in the Wanganu! Guineas. Racefui and Duo may bo the fittest of the others. The Okehu Hurdles, one and three-quarter mites, promises to be ait jnteresting race. The top-weights are not favored greatly, though Kemball's bracket .is likely to be fairly well backed. Otauru Kid, Zola, and Endure look tn hold those abovo them safe, and those behind Otauru Kid will not hear of defeat. The Hack Steeplechase, two and a half miles, will see recent winners In Ngakanni and Mattock sporting silk. They have tare too much condition for their opponents, though Rococo appears to be very forward, A small field will contest the Spring Handicap, eight and a half furlongs. Trespass has been galloping so well recently that lie is sure to be heavily backed. Depredation and Tirana represent recent form, and should be quite capable of giving Kemball's horse a good race. A great race is anticipated in the Futlkl Hack Handicap,, also run over eight and a half furlongs. Warrawee should be favorite, but Piro Piro and Manlabera may prove troublesome. Racing concludes with the FJying Handicap, six furlongs, Which has attracted good .■(printers like Chimera, Hymestra, Inah, Simonldes, etc. Hymestra and Inah may give their backers a good run fpr their money. The Ashburton spring meeting opens today, and will be concluded to-morrow. Wln,iers at Amberley will carry penalties as follows: Hurdles. SBrayshot, lfllbs.; Braomer Welter, High Heels, slbs.; Ashburton Handicap, High Heels, lOlbs., and Will Oakland, lOlbs. •„ Hatftc Handicap, Fabrinade, llllbs. ; Spring Handicap, Will Oakland, lOlbs. The feature of the gathering will be ire meeting between Winter Wtad and Right and Left in the Ashburton Handicap. The former 'has been going best on the tracks, and nay start favorite.
