TARANAKI DAILY NEWS. STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication should be left at the office of the local representative, W. J. Wilson, next Union Bank. September 20. The weather conditions in Stratford to-day have been particularly unpleasant. A heavy downpour set in during last night, and wind-driven rain has continued to fall incessantly all day. In consequence very few people ventured out, and business has been noticeably slack. The girls' hostel movement is beginning to attract attention in Stratford. Several of the retailers find they are "up against it" in the matter of obtaining young lady assistants, 'and definite inquiries are now being, made regarding the possibilities of establishing a hostel in the town for business girls. The decision of the Stratford Retailers' Association not to recognise any subscription list excepting those authorised by the Borough Council will receive the hearty support of all business people. "Cadging" has become far too prevalent in Stratford, and even though i the cause may be a good one, business firms resent being repeatedly asked for contributions. , The Rev. Father Maples is reported to be doing well, though it will not be possible for him to move from the hospital for some time yet. At the meeting of the Borough Council to-night it was decided, by 5 votes to 4, to appoint the electrical engineer (Mr. E, F. Hollands) as acting borough engineer until after the loan proposals are submitted to the ratepayers. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), and Crs. Cameron, Thompson, JJewtcm, and Hunter voted for the motion, and Crs. Jackson, Stewart, Lawson and Walsh voted against it. It was also decided that Mr. A. C. Russ should continue to act as working foreman until the staff is reorganised. * At the Borough Council meeting, on the motion of the Mayor, it was decided that the new by-laws relating to the storage of inflammable goods, such as benzine, should be put into operation at once. The Ma.for stated that there were instances of benzine being stored in quantities which constituted a danger to the public. In reply to a question, the Mayor said that 200 gallons was the maximum that could be stored in any one place, and that such place jnust be 20 feet from any other building. Ladies!
