SOLDIERS ASSAULT A POLICEMAN.

THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. Masterton, Nov. 20. Two soldiers, named W. J. Ross and .T. S. Duncan, have been sentenced to three months' imprisonment by Featherston justices on two charges of assaulting a police constable on Saturday night last, and inciting others to do «o. The trouble arose through the men being put out of an hotel at the closing hour. One of the constables was rather badly mauled by the crowd, Duncan shouting "Come on, West Coasters, put the boot in." The justices commented strongly on the men's behaviour, and said the accused had committed a cowardly assault.
