HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Horticultural Society was held last night. The president (Mr. G. Tisch) presided. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the president referred to the first rose show held by the So ciety. lie had noticed that the r ose growers came to the society and asiced for a rose show; they practically tied 1 the Society's hands with regard to prize list, price of admission, free entrance, and so on. But when show day came, most of these people were conspicuous by their absence, leaving the show to be carried out by two members of the Society—.Messrs 'MeG alley and Sandford —who had been opposed to the idea of holding this show, 'but who loyally supported t>.e decision of the Society. He referred to the comparatively Siuall door takings at the spring show. Tho annual report and balance sheet were adopted. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. Geo. H. McGahey; vicepfesidents; -Mrs. Doekrill, Messrs. g. Smith, Cr. Tisch, W. W. Smith, N. K. Mdjiarmid, F. W. Sandford, H. R. Cjitfcteyj Col. messenger, §. W. Shaw; coirimittee, Mesdames D. K. Morrison, Jj Paton, H. F, Russell, J. Grant, Ellerm, Misses Hemptott, Smith, Percy-Smith, Stanford, Godfrey, Messrs. J. Gibson, J. Paton, F. Doodacre, A. Hooker, H. F. Russell, G. W. Browne, E. B. Kyngdon, E. W. Griffiths; nudity Mr. W. C. Weston; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. L. Humphries. The retiring president donated three guineas as prize money for the cottage garden competition. He then vacated the chair in favor of the new president. It was decided to issue duplicate entry tickets to competitors for the Simplification of tl'fe system of delivery of exhibits at the conclusion of the show.
Upon the motion of Messrs. P. W. Sandford and J. Pa ton, a very hearty vote of thanks was conveyed to the retiring president. T<K'e mover stated that even if Mr. Tisch ha'cf done nothing else, ■lie lied dJ>n" a deal of good in inaugurating the garden competition. It was a plea'.UT. lie said, to find a man who worked so whole-heartedly without fishing for something in return. It was decided to recommend the committee to hold the spring 1 show in the second week in December next, and that a rose show be held. Votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies who had taken such a keen and prominent interest in the Societv, and to all who had in any way assisted; also to the press. Mr. McGaliey moved to alter Rule 14. to provide that a protest committee of five (three to form a quorum) he set up. and that this committee settle, on the night of the show, all disputes arising out of the allotment of the prizes. Tn the .past the rules provided" for settlement of disputes by the committee ut its next meeting.
