THE STEAMER SERVICE. j Mr.- if. Rudd, manager of the Union l ' Steam Ship Company,'took advantage ofa business trip to Stratford to-<lay to have a conversation with several mem-1 hers of the Chamber of Commerce re-| gardin'g the suggestions as to the alterations for the present steamer service between New Plymouth a'id Wellington. He pointed out that whilst the proposals would be advantageous to the importers, they would, at least during the summer months, seriously inconvenience the exporters, inasmuch as in order to connect with the Home boats it was necessary that the steamers leave 'New Plymouth on Saturdays and Mondays. This naturally .necessitated the arrival of the vessels at the end of the week, and', under present conditions, it would be almost impossible to run a vessel to arrive earlier in the week. He agreed with the expressions that have been made that the systjm m vogue of handlings goods at the shed was weak, and i tended to delay when large cargoes were [landed within a couple of days. It was not the fault of the staff, but of the lack of facilities, and he thought that j the suggestion that in the 'goods shed there should be a double platform, on one side of which goods for the country couVl bp unloaded, and 071 the other the \i>w Plvu'outh fronds, would mafov'«"v n*si=t iii tbo sneodv handling of flip pfwwops, and do awav with the 1 delays which occurred nt present. Tt is a iroort thing to hear all sides of the en sc. and the information Mr. Rudd has "riven the members will enable them to T>ew thn situation through the spectacles of the shipping company. Tt is rennrt.ed that Mr. T). S. Maxwell has leased his farm at Toko to Mr. O. Ooldtip. A general meeting of the Stratford A. and P. Association will be held on S\turdav. A parade of the Stratford MoanlcJ Hides will be hold to morrow.
