FRESH PORK SUPPLIES.
Farmers who have been in the habit ol rearing pigs and killing tiiem for sale to butchers and pork butchers in .New Plymouth have an especial interest in the letter which has 'been addressed to all butchers in the town biy Mr (!. .). Stone, Government meat inspector and manager ol' the New Plymouth abattoir. .Mr Stone draw* immediate attention to section 17 0 f the Slaughtering and Inspection Act c.f IiJOU, which reads:—"lt is hereby declared that as long as a registered abattoir available for slaughtering stock is established in any district, it shall not be lawful to slaughter in any such district any stock for human consumption or for export, or t, 0 dross therein any carcase for sale, except at a registered abattoir, or to sell or to expose for sale in any such district any meat slaughtered elsewhere than in a registered abattoir." For the purposes of this Act the term "stock" is meant to include rattle, sl'veep, swine, or goals of either sex or any age. As the New Plymouth abattoir has now been registered and gazetted as No 16 no slock that docs not bear the abattoir stamp must be offered or exposed for sale within the borough, or within three niiks of the nearest boundary of the borough. This is a matter on which considerable doubt has been expressed, many contending that there are qualifying sections of the Act, but the Government veterinarian is evidently prepared to support the views expressed above.
