The Daily News TUESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1904. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
For some time past the Chamber of Commerce has been working, as it were, with two secretaries. The position was this. Mr W. Bewley, ns secretary, did much to revive the interest in the institution, and was appointed president. Ah -it was deemed inadvisable for one man to hold the dual position of president and secretary, it became necessary to find a new secretary. It was thought that to ask Mr liewley to resign on this account would hardly have been a grateful act, and it was decided that all ends would be served by retaining that gentleman as secretary. and to allow him to use the signature of Mr Griffiths, his partner in business, whilst the secretarial duties were still carried on by Mr Howie}'. Tills latter gentleman is about to take an extended holiday trip, visiting the Old Country in his travels, and the executive of the Chamber thought that during his absence MiGriffiths would find his time fully occupied without undertaking the work of secretary. On Mr Bowley tendering- bis resignation, applications were called, with the i-esult that out of nine applications Mr H, D. Bedford was appointed secretary. Mr Bedford is in every way suited for the position, having ainplo leisure and, on intimate knowledge of the trade of this port and of T a ran a ki generally, from his long experience here as Collector of Customs. The now secretary will have the advantage of following in the footsteps of u most capable and courteous official and of taking office when the Chamber of Commerce is in a good position, both as regards finance and membership.
