VOLUNTEER NEWS.
About 40 members of the Taranaki Rifles and Guards left for Wellington on Thursday morning to take part in the military tournament, in that city. The JJifles were in charge of Lieut, i Cock and Oolor-Sergt. Armitage, and the Guards of Sergt. Messenger. A RECORD MAROH. Eighteen members of the Guards and three members of the Rifles under the command of Captain Taunton put up a record yesterday (Friday). They left 1 New Plymouth by the mail train in the morning and proceeded as far as Strat- ' ford, where they detrained. They were met at the Stratford station by the Stratford Mounted Rifles, about 50 strong, who gave them a very hearty welcome; after a short delay they left Stratford for New Plymouth at 9 o'clock. The Stratford corps accompanied them nearly aB far as Midhirst. Inglewood was reached at 12.30; a delay of an hour took place here for dinaer,'and Bell Block was reached at 6 p.m.; after a short stop for tea, the march was resumed, town being reached at 8.30. The City Band went out to Bell Block and headed the march in. Oa reaching town the men marched through Devon-street to Queen-street, then to the railway station and via Brougham and Devon-street to the Drill Hall. Baf ore dismissing the men Captain Taunton thanked the City Band for meeting them and cheering the end of the march. He then called for three cheers for tho Band, which were heartily given, Addressing the men, he said the march was something for the Guards and their comrades of the Rifles, who had gone with them, to be proud of, Thirtytwo miles was, he believed, the record for New Zealand, and he thanked them for the way they bad behaved and cirried the march through. Hsarty cheers were then given for Captain Taunton, and Band for the Guards. Thare was an enormous crowd assembled to witness the Guards arrivo and dismissed, who as the men word dismissing, gave three rousing cheers for the Guards.
