The s.s. Kanieri will not arrive at Waitara until Saturday, the detention being due to heavy gales. Mr. E. J. Carthew reports having leased, with compulsory purchasing clause, Mr. J. Petch's 317 acre farm at Kahotn, to Mr. J. Montefiore, o£ Okato. On Thursday afternoon (to-morrow) Mr. Newton King will hold a sale of suburban sections near the Te Henui. The property was formerly a part of Oilman's estate, and each section has a gOod^sea view and good drainage. The saltf will be held on the ground, wet or dry, at 2 30 o'clock. We understand the Guards will join the Rifles in the march out prior to the cantata David, which is being given largely under the patronage of the volunteers in aid of the Troopers' Memorial Fund. On Thursday week the " Eyediggers" play a football match against the " Pyramids" in the Recreation Grounds in aid of the fund for erecting a memorial to the men who have fallen in South Africa. As both these notable clubs contain some veterans, and have been steadily practising for the "past six years" or so, a splendid game, particularly interesting to onlookers, should result.

The Manawatu Bailway Company, says a Prfcss wire, claim that,, upon the terms offered, the Government will be getting the line at some £200,000 leas than has been spent on it. In view of the competition to which it is subjected by the Government cutting rates, and the less expense at which it can be worded in conjunction with Government lines, it is also -contended the railway is worth a great deal more 'to the Government than even to the Company. An Imfudbhi Fraud has been perpetrated upon a well-known Member of Parliament. This gentleman recently entered a small chemist's establishment in Northampton and asked for a box of Holloway's Pills. A packet was givon to him, for which he paid and then left the shop. Having to leave for London that evening, it was not until he was in tha train, many miles away from Northampton, that ho discovered he had been swindle i. Instead, of Holloway's Pills he found that a pernioiouS and worthless imitation had been foisted upon him. Of course the rubbish w&s thrown away, and the M.P. had to wait until .he" arrived in London before he could' get genuine article.-Advt.
