EDUCATIONAL.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Timaru, January 4. At the Education Institute to-day, the annual report and balance-sheet wore adopted. The ordinary account is in credit .£ll4 7s lid and the legal assistance fund in credit £321 lOs. The Jowrnal was recommended to the support of teachers. It was resolved that, if necessary, the Education Act should be amended to empower boards to appoint and transfer without consulting the Committee; that all branches be urged to petition both Houses in favour of a colonial scale staff and salaries. A motion in favour of a School Children's Transvaal Relief Fund was carried by acclamation, as also was a motion that the Institute' should be empowered to join the Union I of teachers' institutes throughout the) Empire. The question of a superannuation fund was postponed. A new constitution submitted bjjstho Committee was considered, and adopted with amendments. It provides that there shall be one district institute in each education | district, except that existing at Waikato ; the Institute representation on the Council to be one representative for 20 members, two for 50, one for each additional 40 ; the subscription to the Central Institute to be iis par msmber, Is to go to the legal assistance fund ; in case of emergency, the executive to have power to rnaise a special lavy not exceeding 10s per member in any year. A proposal to refer the new constitution to the District Institutes before final adoption was lost, only two voting for it. The next annual meeting is to be held in Wellington in January, 1901, Mr. W. T. Grundy, Wellington, was elected president; Mr, T, H. Gill, Wellington, secretary; Messrs. R. D. Stewart W. Davidson (Ocago), and O. Watson (Wellington), tha other members ot the Executive. A presentation was mads to Mr. Gfuudy for his valuable services as secretary for many years, and a silver sslver, purso of sovereigns, and silver stivioita rings to Mrs. Grundy. High eulogiuins were passed upon the recipients.
