TARATA.

(fkom ouk own oobeespondent.) ' Ouh little township was en fete on New Year's Day, when a large number of paopla were ittracted from far and near to witness our annual sports and races. Up till about 12 o'clock the Junction lload was lined with vehicles and horses conveying holiday-seekers from Inglewood and neighbourhood, and a good number were also present from the other direction, viz., from Purangi and the Matau. The Township Reserve, where the sports are held, was for once transformed from almost a blank into a very busy scene of life and gaiety. The officers and committee worked hard for the success of the sports, and that their efforts were rewarded goes without saying, Mr. XJ. Lucas, who is on a visit from Wellington, where he is now permanently located, is president of tbe Sports Olub, and on this occasion acted as judge in place of Mr. G. Death, who was indisposed. Mr. H. Waite made a capital starter. Mr. G. Aiken was clerk of the course, and Mr. J. Grieve clerk of the scales. The] secretary, Mr, E. Govenlock,, was untiring in his exertions, and Mr. J. Uhuyno (treasurer) was also assiduous in his attention to duty. Everyone coQCurned worked hard to make the sports the success they evidently were. A dance followed the sports, as usual, and was attended by about 25 couples. The ladies were very tastefully dressed, and looked their best, Dance music was supplied by Miss Baxter, Mrs. T. Taylor, Mr. G. Aiken, and several other well-known musicians, on a variety of instruments. There were also a few capitally-rendered songs at intervals, and a well-rendered recitation by Mi™. Worm. Everyone present seemed to enjoy themselves, and did not leave off much before daybreak. I forgot to mention that Mrs. J. Cheyn kept the refreshment booth on the Sports Ground, and seemed to do a good trade.
