NELSON FORESTRY SOCIETY.
INAUGURAL MEETING
(From "The Colonist," Oct. 7, 1918.) In response to the invitation issued by the provisional committee appointed to 'promote the formation of a Forestry Society in Nelson, a gathering of twenty-one assembled at the Insittute on Saturday evening, those present being representative of both town and country. Mr F. G. Gibbs was voted to the chair, and the report of the provisional committee was considered. 1 lie following resolutions were then carried:—
"That the Nelson Forestry Society he formed/ Proposed by Dr. Washbourn and seconded by. Mr H. Rix-lVott. "That the objects of the srvi»ty be the the same as those in the ukiet of the New Zealand Forestry League, pages
That the annn~! subscription for membership be sa."—Proposed by Mr T. Neale and seconded by Mr Baigent. "Tli at the affairs of the society bo vested in a committee of not less thru five members, the president and the secretary."—Proposed by Mr J. H Cock and seconded by Mr H. P. Washbourn.
"That the annual meeting be held in the month of May in each year on a day to be fixed by the committee."—Proposed byMr WasWbourn and seconded by Mr Knapp. "That the end of the financial year bs March 31st."—Proposed by Mr Cock and ( seconded by Mr Rix-Trott. The election of officers was then proceeded with.
Mr Neale proposed, seconded by Mr Aiarris, that Dr. Washbourn, of Nelson, be the first president of the society.— Lnrneu unanimous]v.
Mr Ledger was elected secvetaw and treasurer, on the motion of Dr. Washbourn, seconded by Mi' Cock. The following were elected as a committee :—-Messrs A. P. Allport, Marris, Rj.\--Trott. W. K. Wilkes, J. A Day Kvngsland, F. G. Gibbs, J.'Corder F. Whitwell, and H\de. '
Mr J. Arthur Day read a highly interesting and most instructive paper on •'The Forest Trees of the Nelson District." An interesting and lengthy discussion followed.
A. hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Day, who intimated that there was still plenty of material for another paper on the same subject. it was decided to adjourn the reading of Mr H. G. Kingsland's paper on "The Commercial Aspect of Tree Planting in the Nelson District" until the next meeting, in about a month or six weeks' time.
On the chairman announcing that Mr Marsden had intimated that he would welcome the members of the society at his place at Stoke to inspect his plantations on some Saturday afternoon, Mr Neale moved, and it was carried, that th-i trip bo arranged as early as possible and the exact date advertised.
