NELSON TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

(From "The Colonist," Sept. 19th.) The annual meeting of the Nelson Trotting Club was held at Mercer's rooms last _ evening. The President (Mr H. Baigent) was in the chair, and there was a large attendance of members.

The following new members were elected .-—Messrs J. A. Stringer, E J G. Coleman, A. I. Manoy and L. Duncan.

The report presented by the committee showed that the club had made a profit on the year's working of £75 14s Hd. The total assets were valued at £3SO 9s lOd, and th-are were no "liabilities. Nominations for the meeting amounted to £114 17s 6d, as against £103. 10s for the previous year, and the amount of acceptances came to £103 as against. £103 ss. The sum of £500 was given in stakes, the same as last year. The race nveeting passed olf" very successfully > both from-a sporting as well as a speculative point of view, the sum of £5603 being handled by the tota lisa tor, as against £4560 last year. The amount paid to the Government in taxation was £274 5s Bd. 'Members learned with pleasure that the Agricultural and Pastoral Association decided during the year to erect a modern grandstand, and the new structure will be comploted in ample time for the club's next annual mooting. The club was committed to an increased rental, but this it was believed would be more than' compensated for by the comfort and convenience that would be provided. \ The President, in moving the adoption of the report expressed gratification at tlie satisfactory state of tlie club's finances. An endeavour, ho said, should bo made to increase the membership of the club, for on a strong membership much of the success of a club dopended. He complimented the secretary on the satisfactory manner in which the accounts were kept. The new grandstand was being erected, and in connection with the upkeep the racing. chib3 were contributing £200 per annum. The Trotting Club's share was £66, -as against £20 previously paid.

Mr. F. 0. Hamilton, m seconding the motion, said that the club had every reason to. he satisfied with making, a pro*t on a one day's meeting. It' r would. ,be noted that the club had paid a considerable amount in taxation. lie endorsed, the remarks of the president that- much of the success of the club was due to the secretary.

Mr. Chapman expressed the opinion that a strong endeavour should be made to increase the membership^ of the club.

After further discussion the motion was carried.

The election of officers resulted, as follows: —President, Mr. H. Baigenfc (re-elected); vice-president, Mr J. H. Finney; committee, Messrs D. Crushek F. G. Edwards, A. Grant, F. O. Hamilton, R. Harris R. Hunter, T. W. Mborhouse, J. A. Watson, and M. P. Webster ; hon. treasurer, Mr. R. Hunter; handicapper, Mr. J. Noble (re-elected, after n ballot) ; starter, Mi-. R. Hunter (ijg-elected); stewards, Messrs E. Chapman, D. Crttshok, J. H. Finnev, R. Harris, R. Hunter, M. P. Webster' F. G. Edwards, T. W. Moorhouse, and two vacancies to be filled by the committee j timekeepers, Messrs R. Hunter and J. Hagen (re-elected); auditors, Messrs P. Bond and J. H. Finney (re-elected): Programme Committee', Messrs M. P. Webster, R. Hunter, A. Grant, R. Harris and J. A. Watson (re-elected).

On the motion of Mr. Hamilton, seconded by Mr. Chapman, it was resolved that £500 bo given in stakes at the .forthcoming meeting. The president referred in feeling terms to the loss sustained "by Mr. J. E. Henrys in the death of his son,Mr. J; L. Henrys, who died from injuries received in a motor accident last week. Mr Hemys, he said, was well known in sporting circles throughout ohe Dominion, and his death would be deeply regretted. A motion of sympathy with deceased's relatives was carried, members standing. A vote of thanks to the president concluded the meeting.
