It has been repeatedly circulated that a New Zealand trooper was murdered at Cairo. General Godley writes to the Defence Minister regarding this rumour: He had made most careful inquiries, net only in regard (o the J\ew Zealanders, but also the Australians, but none of them had been stabbed. It was the purest invention. He stated further that many letters had been stopppd,. by -the Censor, as they were full of extraordinary stories of tttacks on Turks, etc. Curiously enough, added General Godley, a few days "go, one of their men was stabbed by -n Italian outside a cafe in Cairo. There was a disturbance going on, but the 'nan took no part in it at all. As he -1 bowed his way through he was stabbed, and the wound was serious enofi^l: to confine him to the hospital. That" was the only case whore an Australian or New Zealandor had been stabbed by a knife. On a tablet beside it will be written the names of H-ioso who bid -€100. To each a replica will he .ei-en, and 1 hope that His Majesty the King of Belgium will f-v'-n it.'" Madame Mo.rba started the bidding with £100, and other bids came in very quickly, until £2100 was pron'-sed When the result was announced the hcuse broke into cheers. The amount resulting from the evening's entertainment totalled £0100.
