BATTLE OF THE AISNE.

ALLIE>S' LEFT FRONT EXTENDING

GERMAN MOVEMENTS NEAR LILLE,

UNSUCCESSFUL ATTACK ON LAS^GNY.

ALLIES' ADVANCE NORTH OF SOISSONS.

(Received Oct. 7, 9.55 p.m.)

Paris, Oct. 6 (evening). Official. —Our front on the left is extending more and more.

Very large masses of German cavalry are reported in the neighbourhood of Lille, preceding foroes moving to the north of the Turcoing-Armentieres line.

The situation on the right bank of the Somme is being appreciably maintained. Alternate advances and retirements occurred between the Somme and the Oise.

The enemy unsuccessfully attempted a heavy attack at Lassigny. We made a slight advance with the co-operation of the British north of Soissons, and some fnogress in the Berry-au-dac dis-. trict.

The situation is unchanged elsewhere,

Armentieres is ten miles north-west of Lille, and Turcoing six miles north by east of the same place. Both are on the French side of the frontier. Lassigny is nine miles south of Roye.
