PREMIER ON THEIR DEVELOPMENT.

. The Hon. W. F. Massey at the opening of the winter show this afternoon . said that for the year ending March . 31st, 1913, the principal products totalled £21,166,545, and for 1914 the value • 5 was £22,112,996. Miscellaneous ex- ]\ ports were worth £1,400,000 and £I,' [1877,044 respectively, making a grand , total of £22,560,545 for 1913 and £23,----,990,040 for 1914 3 showing an increase , (of £1,439,495. . j Mr Massey emphasised the fact that . j the growth of the primary products of Now Zealand had necessitated the opening of new markets. He cited the west coast of Canada, the west coast of the United States, and in the near future the east coast, via the Panama Canal. The export of wool, ho said, for the year ending March 31st amounted to 133,000,000 lbs, valued at £7,500,000. This showa, compared with the export of ten years ago an increase of 17£ per cent, in quantity and 67| per cent, in value. The statistics of the trade in frozen meat also revealed satisfactory progress. Mutton increased by 179,516 cwts, valued at £361,252. This was the highest for ten years. Lamb increased by 23§,492 cwts., valued at £723,602, and compared with ten years ago showed an increase of 80 per cent in quantity and 135 p?r cent, in value; beef, 328,988 cwts,. valued at £446,816, .and compared with ten years ago there was an increase of 81 per cent, in quantity and 109 per cent, in, value. In hides and skins' the increase for last year was £118,679, the increase for the ten years being 129 per cent. Tallow showed an increase for the year of £28,236, and for the ten years an increase of £229,659. New records for butter and cheese were established, said the Premier. In butter the increase for the .year was £26,036 cwts, equal to £83,394. the increase for ten years being over 20 'per cent, in quantity, and over 50 per cent, in value. The quantity of cheese in 1912-13 exported totalled 634 173 cwts., valued at £1,859,179. In 1913----14 it was 722,371 cwts., valued at £2,----195 273 an increase of 108,198 cwts, and £336,094 in value. In 1912 the area of orchards, said the Premier was 36,967 acres. The follows year it was 38,797 acres, while this year it is 41,646 acres. The export of fruit in 1912 was 14,869 cases, in 1913 33,000 cases, while this year it readied &5,000 cases.
