NELSON CLUB.

(From "The Colonist,"- Oct. 6.) On Saturday afternoon, under the most favourable "Circumstances, the Nelson Bowling Club opened its season. More players turned up than could bo given a game, consequently quite a number were disappointed. There were also a large number of non-playing visitors, the "fair sex being well represented. The Maitai and ■ Wxi-kefield cubs had splendid musters. . _. . ,- About half-past two' Mr. Gteo.;. Hogg (president) expressed his pleasure at the attendance of so many visitors to assist his club in opening its season. As would he seen, the green was in excellent order, and the wisdom of an early closing last year could not be doubted, as almost every bare patch, so prominent at the end of the season, was now well grassed. The club had an excellent caretaker in Mr. rhos. M-anson, and the evidence of his work was visible in every direction. Whilst regretting the loss of several members, mainly through leaving the district, it was satisfactory to know that there were a number of new members, so that the club was over its strength of last year, and the season's prospects were very encouraging. He was glad to see that the relations between every club were most cordial, and he hoped this would continue. -Since last season a. bowling centre hadjbeen formed, comprkinsv the eight clubs in the IVelson and I\farlborough districts, with headquarters at Nelsqn, and during the Christmas holiday^, or some convenient time, it was probable that a centre tournament would be arranged. The club intended this season to specially cater for Wednesday players by arranging a challenge competition, :and a committee of Wednesday players' would be appointed to carry the proposal into effect. He hoped the season would be a prosperous and enjoyable one, and that he would receive the'co-operation of all.members towards this end. During the present week the green would only be open.on' Wednesday and Saturday afternoons in order to give the_ young grass an opportunity of strengthoning. He theri, amidst ap~ plan-He, declared" the gr'e^u open, M'rr Hogg (wife of the president) bowling down n. first. f,nd v. very good, bowl.
