NELSON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING.
(From ./'Tho Colonist," July^2.)
The. annual meeting of ' the Nelson Horticultural Society was:held at the Institute lasfc evening. The president (Mr. B. H. Moller) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. .-
In the-annual report tlio committeeregretted that tlio year li'ad Hot been altogether successful. Four shows were held, and the classes were generally well fiiled, and competition was keen. The- catalogues for tlio various shows wore issued in book form>, but the advisability of fixing dates so far ahead was questioned. During the season 1200 vases were purchased, which should prove a valuable asset to the society. For the purpose of making 'the shows moro attractive the committee introduced band and orchestral music during the day, and also afternoon teas, but the attendance of the public was' not appreciably increased by the venture. The .shows as a whole had not been well attended, and this fact together with the increased amount distributed as prize money accounted to a largo, extent for the unfinandal stato of the society. The membership showed a decline. The actual. losses ■on the various shows were.: Bulb show £12; r'osb show £13; sweet pea show £22; chrysanthemum show £18. The prize money during the year had been considerably in excess of previous years ; and it was desirous that this item should have the attention of the incoming committee. • The thanks of the society wero due to those ladies and gentlemon who acted as judges during the year, also to Mr. Ward and his orchestra, and to Messrs. Begg and Co., Ltd. for the use of a piano. The report concluded by urging members to work together in the interests of tho society.
The chairman, in speaking to tlio report and balance^ sheet, said he feared there had been extravagance during tho past year, and he thought they •should have one show less, and reduce the number of classes.
