WeSHngton, July 15. Dr. Va'iintine, Chief Medical Ofiioer, referring to the outbreak of smallpox among the Maoris stated this afternoon that the position was satisfactory. The situation is ißtilla grave one, ?nd extreme vigilance on the part of the authorities is necessary. Such, a ■reassuring*'statement *«> Hint especially e:\pressedrby. The, authorities are now prosecuting a vigorous campaign, and •in Wellington their efforts .are being systematically supported by the bulk of the community, large numbers of whom to-day isubmitted themselves to■'innoculatibh.
Dr. \Talintine added to the statement above lecorded that no iresh developments were disclosed, and ,m> i«ar as can be ascertained there is reason to believe that the steps now being taken will bo-sufficient to moot the present and future exigencies. The officials of the racing club this afternoon stated that tlwjro had-'been no intimation received from the health authorities that Maoris would be debarred from attending the races, though those living a distance out may experience trouble witn the railway officials. -
