OUTBREAK IN MAORI COLLEGE
Hastings,. July 10.. A rumour was current this afternoon that a case of smallpox had been-de-tected' in a student nt the Maori- agricultural college at Bridge Pa, about nine miles from Hastings. At the ro-
quest of ihc Health Department Barcroft left for the college this afternoon.', to make an examination, and declares the case to be one of smallpox. The patient is a youth, of 17 years pi age, who arrived at the collego from the north on the 11th inst., and has well marked evidence of recent infection. A number of other students aw showing symptoms, but the doctor will be unable to form a definite opinion regarding them until to-morrow. Steps have been, taken to isolate the sufferer. The students and the staff will bt vaccinated to-morrow. The stationmaster has received instructions thai until further advised no Natives *oi half-castes are. to be allowed to join any train between Napier and Woodvine unless they can produce a permit from the Health Department authorising them to do so. A number of Natives wore prevented from travelling by the mail train this morning.
