Wellington, July 15. So far three deaths have occurred from smallpox, all Maoris. There are now 23 patients or suspects at Point Chevalier Infectious Diseases Hospital, all but d'ne being Maoris;. at Taupin there are four natives isolated; at Thames one case; at Maung&tautari three; at Otorohanga three; at Te Awamutu three.
The cases reported at Ormondvillo are now declared not to be smallpox.
No definite details are available- concerning the numbers at Bay of Islands and in tho Marsden and Kaipara districts; but reports to the Department indicate that the position has been grossly exaggerated.. At Maungakawhia, near Whangarei, where 300 cases of disease were supposed to exist, it is now been ascertained that only one was found. >Dv Mackenzie left Wellington this morning for Wanganui to vaccinate the Natives.
Dr Cousons also left for Taupo. Every effort is being made to confine the Natives to infected districts.
There are no signs of the disease in the Wairarapa Natives, and it is unlikely "that tho racing club will take steps to prevent Maoris attending the races to-morrow, though tho Health Department has requested their exclusion from the course.
Already 20,000 tubes'of lymph have gone to infected districts.
