A meeting of the committee of tho ' Waimea Athletic and Cycling Association was held in the Oddfellows' Lodge-room on Monday evening, tho President (Mr E. S. Hoult ) in tho chair. The meeting was called for tho purpose of receiving the statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the 1910 sports meeing. The Secretary (Dr Pearless) presented the statement, which showed a profit of £20. The total receipts were £152. The balance sheet was unanimously adopted. At this stage Dr. Pearless announced his intention of retiring from the position of secretary. Having served the association for 14 years, ho i'elfe that he< had held the position long enough. Dr. Pearless expressed regret that he found it necessary, for various reasons, to retire from the position. He considered that the. time had arrived when the secretary should receive some remuneration, as the funds of the association, wero in a haalthy condition, and the work warranted payment of tho secretary. He had much pleasure in nominating Mr F. E. Shuttleworth as a fitting person to fill tho position. Mr H. J. Harris seconded the motion, which was unanimously agreed to. Mr Shuttleworth did not definitely accept the position. His appointment would give universal satisfaction. Dr. Pearless having left the room, the. committee, on the motion of the President, resolved to show their appreciation of the doctor's .services in connection with the association in a tangible form. The President having secured a souvenir o.n approval, this was approved by the committee. Dr. Pearless was sent for. Mr Hoult then, on behalf of tho association, asked Dr. Pearless to accept a gold chain and Maltese cross pendent, to be suitably inscribed, as a small token of the estoeni and respect in which lie, tho doctor, was held by committee, competitors, and general public alike. Mr Hoult also spoke of the ragret they all felt at Dr. Pearless's retirement, but hoped they would always have his support and interest in their association. The- services rendered to the association and sport generally by Dr. Po-arless were unique in character. Messrs C. Knapp, H. J. Harris, I. Tuiinicliff, F. H. Durbridge. E. Hodgins, and J. llardman all testified as to the splendid mannor in which the secretarial duties had been carried out.
Dr. Pearless in reply, said that tho presentation had come to him as a, great surprise.. He would be pleased to accept it in tho spirit in which it was given. His services to the association had been a labour of love. He had always taken a keen interest in sport of all kinds, a.nd he sincetrely hoped that the Wakefield sports would alway.-. prove the attraction that they had done in the past.
