NELSON RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

(From "Tlie Colonist," Feb. 8.)

The fourteenth annual rifle meeting "was held at Brightwater on Wednesday there being a very good attendance of marksmen. Th© day was not of tho best for shooting, as a choppy southerly troubled most of the men in tho morning, veering to a nor'-wester ift the afternoon and blowing mucfi. stew - ier, when tho scoring went up considerably. Amongst tho competitors werfc j ex-champions J. W. Ching, J. W. "Milroy and R. M. Irvine. All of tkesb marksmen were firing with a very heavy foresight, which is claimed to enable them to hold elevation, better than with the ordinary Government issue barley corn. However, it did not tell to any extent except in tho aggregate. Wlien firing commenced at the last raugo only a few points separated Mihoy, Gledhill, Irvine and Jamieson. Gk-dhill finished first with 271. Milroy had to make 2 bulls to tie, which he did. Irvine Jiad 5 shots to go and had to make all bulls to tie, and ho also was equal to the occasion. Jamieson being the last to finish had to make 34 to tie, but he fell short by a point. The shoot off to decide who should hold the Belt took place at 700 yards, 5 shots per man, when it was so dark that the fire from tho rifle was plainly seen. The bulls eyo was almost indiseernablc. Mihoy scored 3, 3, 5, 5, 5,-21; Glcdliill 3,4, 5,3,2—17 ; Irvine 2,2,5,0,0,-9. Milroy thus holds the Belt for the year. Thanks are due to Capt. J. L. Ching, who had a hard days' work in tho trench. Captain G. H. Hammond, as range officer, kept the men going splendidly, and had a hard time whilst the wind was at its worst, challenges being frequent. Lieut.-Col. Harkness and Major Bryant also assisted, whilst the secretary, F. Gledhill, had his hands full all day and yet shot up to second place. Possibles were not plentiful on account of the tricky wind, J. W. Milroy, F. Sharland, A. J. Eden and R. Irvine being the only nien to register same.
