POLITICAL MEETING.
A meeting of those interested in . the formation of a committee to furj ther the interests of Mr John > Graham's return to Parliament was t held at Canvastown on August 25th. r There was a large number of influi j ential men present. On tbe motion of Mr F. Rush, Mr '. James Hughes was elected chairman, . Mr James Dalton vice-chairman, and Mr E. H. Stratford hon. secretary. The Chairman, on taking the 3 j chair,stated that he was very pleased ti to see such a large number of influ- ) I ential men present. It showed that j th&y appreciated the good work done 3 by the member for the district, and j by forming such a committee it t would give their member encourage- . ment to continue as he had done in 3 1 the past. The Chairman stated that jhe was a great believer in sticking j to the horse that proved himself j staunch, and lifted whenever asked: f he was quite satisfied that none of ! those present would be prepared to '. ! exchange a staunch horse for a colt 1 j that they did not know whether he i would take the collar or breeching, i Mr James Dalton, vice-chairman, . also stated that Mr Graham always worked exceptionally hard in the interests of the district, and being a . member of the Pelorus Road Board he was really in a position to know what Mr Graham had done for the " district, which would speak for itself. " Mr A. Alquist agreed with the other speakers, that it was impos- , sible for tbe district to improve on the present member. ' Mr C. F. Hart, as a resident of J long standing, and also an ex-member L! of different local bodies, stated that i if it had not been for the energy and " ' ability displayed by the Hon. C. H. '< Mills acd the member for the dis- : trict, they would never have received ! a grant from the Government to erect i the Pelorus and WaKamarina bridges, 1 and the ratepayers would have been | saddled with a loan, and had to proi vide a special rate for the same, as ' ■ that flood was general all over New Zealand. He, Mr Hart, stated that in the North Island the local bodies ] were not so fortunate, as they wero, J J and had to raise special loans to reIpair the damage done there ',' Mr F. Rush stated that he had 1 known Mr tiraham from a boy, and \ '■. always found him a very constant j sticker, and what he thought was ' t '. right in the interests of the district J he would fight for, and there was a j plain proof in the way he had opened I up che Wakamarina for settlement. ! Other business of importance was j transacted, which terminated a very j ' successful meeting.
