Floods in Hawke's Bay.
Napiee, January 3. A largely attended meeting of oountry settlers was held, when a strong committee was appointed to act ia conjunction with the Engineer in formulating a general scheme for the protection of the Ahuriri Flats from floods. In response to a request by Captain Russell, the Pos master-General has promised to instruct country Postmasters and telegraphists to report the rise of rivers in the same way/ as wather warnings are given, so that settlers in the plains below may move their stock and household goods when floods are threatened. Oaptain Russell 13 now asking to have the warning posted at telegraph offices on the plains, as they might not be published soon enough in the newspapers. Heavy rain set in this afternoon. The rivers are nearly bank high, and are rising fast. Unless the rain soon ceases there will be a renewal of the floods.
