Chess Congress.
Dunedin, January 3. In the Chess Congress, Oleland and Pleaaanta played a drawn game. Pleasants opened with the Ruy Lopez Clelond adopting the Berlin defence, and the draw was on the 34th move. Brown drew with Borton at the 44th move, the play on both sides being short of Congress form. Edwards adopted the Sioilian defence againßt Mellor, and at the 23rd move won his queen for a rook. Mellor resigned at the 46th move. Smith pleyed fonr knights in opening against Mouat. Smith made a weak move, and lost a pieoe, but played a careful defence, resigning at tbe 58(h move. Barnes defeated Hookham, after a game lasting over six hours, and one of the best so far seen. Barnes adopted the Ruy Lopez, and conducted the attaok on the Steiniz plan. He had an almost iriesietible attaok at the 12th move, whioh Hookham skilfully neutralised at the 45th move. Hookham proposed a draw, but Barnes deolined, having a knight atid five pawns against Hookham's bibhop and five pawns. Barnes won after cix hours thirty-five minutes' play. Brown is still leading with Oleland Beoond (after drawiDg his bye), and Hookham third.
