NEW ZEALAND PROVINCES
CANTERBURY.
Female Servants' Home.—Miss Rye, who brought out a number of single women to Otago, has been staying for some days amongst us. On Wednesday morning a number of ladies met at the house of Mr. Justice Gresson, to hear Miss Rye's views on the subject _of founding a Home for Single Women out of service. The platt-proposed is to build a suitable house, and put it in charge of 'fTmatron, leaving her to work it as a commercial undertaking;" the patrons or committee exercising a control over the moral discipline to be maintained in the establishment. Subscriptions are to be collected, and the Home set on foot as soon as possible.— Press. PItO&BESS OP THE LytTELTON1 AND ChBISTOHUECH Railway.—The Canterbury Press says:—'' The tunnel has been progressing-at the average rate, no difficulty or unusual circumstances having varied the monotony of the work. The whole length of the tunnel, from mouth to mouth, will be 2818 yards. Of this, little short of 1100 yards has been penetrated by the drift way, and nearly the whole of tins distance* has now been enlarged to the full size of the tannel. There has been no brickwork attempted yet on the Lyttelton side, but on the Heathcote end about 400 feet of brick arching has been finished. The earthworks on the line from the Ferry to Christchurch are approaching completion, the bridge over the Heathcote being nearly finished. The line will be opened as soon as the rails arrive, and they are now daily expected. The wharf at the Ferry is begun, and the steam crane lias been ordered, so that we may hope to see the traffic on the line within three months. The Ferry Mead Station has been begun, and will very soon be finished. The swing bridge for the Sumner road over the Heathcote only now awaits the ironwork, which has been 114 days out from England, and is therefore overdue."
