THEFT OF HOME BREW

MAORI FINED CASES BEFORE OTOROHANGA COURT Charged with the theft of nine bottles of home brew, valued at 9s, a Maori, Paratene Hotene, pleaded guilty and was fined £3 by Messrs W. I. Bowyer and R. Morrison, J.P.’s, in the Otorohanga Court. It w’as stated by Sergeant Bissett that Hotene met another Maori, Francis Patrick Gwynn, against whom other charges were pending, in Te Awamutu and came with him to Otorohanga, where the offence was committed. Accused had been in trouble previously but had not been before the Court for the past ten years. He was a hard worker and had been under the influence of liquor when the theft took place. A further charge of stealing an oilskin coat and a pair of gloves was withdrawn by the police. Francis Patrick Gwynn, who was also charged with the same offence, did not appear, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
