PUAHUE NOTES

HOSPITAL RATING SUPPORT FOR FARMERS’ UNION ATTITUDE A well-attended meeting of settlers, convened by Mr L. Richards, was held at Puahue on Wednesday. The convener was appointed to preside. Mr G. S. Hall, riding member of Waipa County, outlined some of the work done in the riding, and went on to explain the existing war restrictions and conditions which are delaying other works. On the question of public hospital policy he stated his opposition to the principle of a rating levy, and indicated his support of the Farmers’ Union in the matter. He also indicated how roading taxation is still being imposed by the Government and paid to the Consolidated Fund, the money then being loaned back to the roading authorities. Mr A. E. Bryant, president of the Farmers’ Union, also addressed the meeting briefly, covering topics already reported in earlier district meetings.

The meeting unanimously resolved to support the Farmers’ Union.
