WOMEN’S DIVISION

TE AWAMUTU BRANCH The W.D.F.U. held their 14th birthday in the Parish Hall on Thursday last. There was a large and representative gathering, including visitors

from other branches —Arohena, Ngahinopouri, Pukeatua, Ohaupo, Rukuhia and Ngaroma, and local organisations —W.W.S.A., Red Cross, St. John’s Guild, Patriotic C.W. League, P.W.M.U., Women’s Institute and Farmers’ Union.

The meeting opened with the creed and prayer.

The President welcomed all visitors and members. Several letters were read from soldiers overseas in appreciation of Christmas parcels received. A most enjoyable programme, including songs by Mr Lewis; elocutionary items, Miss J. Webber; fancy dances, Miss Coleen Gee; songs, Mrs Hooper; violin and pianoforte duets by Mr and Mrs Hines; yodelling song and accompaniment, Mrs Betts. Mrs Calvert, of Hamilton, gave a very interesting talk on the women of Russia.

Mr S. Wyllie, in a very happy little reaching their 14th birthday and on reachin gtheir 14th birthday and on their many achievements. Mrs Downes, as president of the Red Cross, and Mrs L. G. Armstrong, president of the Ladies’ Patriotic Committee, also referred to the splendid work done by the Women’s Division.

Mrs McDonald, president of Ngaroma branch, received a small gift from the president on behalf of her husband, whose birthday was on the same day as the W.D. Mrs Godfrey, president, then called upon Mr S. Wyllie, president of the Farmers’ Union, to light the candles on the beautifully icecTbirthday cake, Mrs Ryburn (Dominion Advisory Board member) to blow them out, and Mr Flay, secretary Farmers’ Union, to cut the cake. This was done midst loud applause. The annual meeting and election of officers takes place in April. The singing of the W.D. song concluded a very happy and successful birthday.
