VETERINARY SCIENCE

MORRINSVILLE ASSOCIATION ESTABLISHMENT OF LABORATORY The following statement on the proposal for the establishment of a laboratory, and other items of interest, has been made by the chairman of the Morrinsville District Veterinary Association, Mr R. T. Scott, of Kurunui (says the Morrinsville Star): — “ The scheme for the establishment of a laboratory by the Morrinsville District Veterinary Association is now proceeding. “ The funds required for the initial cost and maintenance for the first year are in sight, and certain equipment has already been purchased. It is considered that in time the laboratory will become self-supporting.

‘ In the meantime premises are being rented within the buildings at present occupied by the Association in Morrinsville, as a storeroom for drugs, the prevailing circumstances not being considered favourable for a more ambitious undertaking. “ The laboratory will prove of great advantage to the veterinarians and members of the Association. It will assist in diagnosis of diseases by examination of specimens from live animals and dead animals, and will assist in treatment by the production of serums and vaccines, and will assist also in the furtherance of research.

“ The response by members and others to an appeal for funds for this worthy object has been excellent, and members are still forwarding contributions, so that the executive felt justified in commencing the purchase of equipment, feeling confident that the full amount aimed at will soon be attained. “ At present there are five veterinarians on the staff, two being stationed in Morrinsville and three handling cases in the Matamata, Waharoa. and Te Aroha districts.

“ The total membership represents in the vicinity of 950 herds, amounting to approximately 66,000 head of dairy cattle.

“ A waiting list of members has been opened, from which will be filled vacancies due to properties changing hands, etc., at the start of the new season. The applicants on the waiting list will receive preference in the order in which their applications are received.

“ If sufficient additional applications for membership are forthcoming an endeavour will be made to obtain the services of a further veterinarian, probably from Canada.”
