KAWHIA BOWLING CLUB

KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED. A meeting of the Kawhia Bowling Club was held on Friday. evening, there being a fair number of members present. Mr Martin Oldbury was elected to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The balance-sheet revealed a satisfactory position, the Club being in credit to the amount of £ll 4s. Accounts amounting to £3 9s 7d were passed for payment, and on the suggestion of Mr Wightman it was agreed to hand the balance in hand to Mr Davies in recognition of his unsparing efforts in the interests of the Club.

The chairman, in supporting Mr Wightman’s proposal, spoke highly of Mr Davies’ services, and stated that were it not for him and his unremitting care of the green there would be no bowling in Kawhia. Mr Davies expressed thanks jfor the unexpected concrete evidence of appreciation, remarking that he was keenly interested in the game, and would like to do more for the Kawhia Club than present circumstances permitted.

Mr Oldbury stated his intention to present a gold button for challenge games (singles), remarking that it was sometimes difficult to arrange for doubles, but such difficulty rarely arose in respect to singles games. On the motion of Mr Braine, seconded by Mr Davies, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Oldbury.

The chairman spoke of the service rendered to the Club by the secretary (Mr Wightman). He believed that secretarial posts were not sought after, and that such office entailed much work and responsibility; but Mr Wightman had fulfilled all the duties associated with his office in a way that did him credit and gave satisfaction to the Club.

Other members spoke in the same strain, and a vote of thanks to the secretary, proposed by the chairman and seconded by Mr Davies, was carried by acclamation.

Mr Wightman said it had been a pleasure to work for the Club, as members had co-operated to assist in fostering Club interests.

On Mr McKenzie’s suggestion it was agreed to hold the general meeting in August to arrange for opening day and ensure timely notice-of the date decided upon to open the seasen.

A Club member having sustained some financial loss whilst engaged in Club concerns, it was decided to reimburse him by individual subscription, the chairman remarking that in a small community all should pull together. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
