SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

VALEDICTORY. PRESENTATIONS TO DEPARTING SETTLERS. A pleasant function was held in the Ngahinapouri Hall when a large number of residents of the district gathered to bid farewell to thpee settlers and their wives who have been resident in the district for a large number of years. The hall had been charmingly deco • rated with autumn flowers and ageMr Neil Reid, on behalf of those present handed to Mr and Mrs Raley, who have lived in the district for over twenty years, a fire-side chair and a cushion as tokens of the esteem in which they were held. Mr Raley replied suitably. Mr R. Thomas asked Mr and Mrs Sanders, who have been resident in the district for twenty years, to accept a dinner set and a cushion.

Mr Stewart Reid presented Mr and Mrs Moore, who have lived in the dis trict for many years, with a dinner set and a cushion. Mr Reid said their departure would be regretted. Tho settlers had shown their willingness to help the district in every way, and he wished them success and hap pines. : in their future homes. Mr Sanders suitably replied. Mr Moore was unable to be present. All the departing guests were accorded musical honours, and later a delicious afternoon tea was served. NGAHINAPOURI DOINGS. CROQUET AND BRIDGE CLUBS. The closing of Ngahinapouri Ladies’ Croquet Club was held in perfect weather, and an enjoyable time was spent by players and spectators. During the afternoon the president, Mrs Neil, presented Mrs Sanders, one of the members who is leaving shortly to make her home at Takapuna, with a beautiful bowl. Mrs Reid also presented Mrs McGrgor with a crystal vase for her services as secretary to the Club.

Afternoon tea brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.

The annual meeting of Ngahinapouri Bridge Club was held in the local hall, when it was decided to continue with the weekly evenings of play. The following committee was elected: Secretary and treasurer, Mrs Neil Reid; committee, Mesdames Wilkinson and McCallum and Messrs McCallum, J. Smith, and G. Mills. Delegates were Messrs Neil Reid and R. Thomas. DEPARTING SETTLERS HONOURED. MR AND MRS E. W. TOZER. Mr and Mrs E. W. Tozer, old settlers of the Kio Kio district, who are about to retire to Auckland, were fare welled by a large gathering of friends and church people at the Methodist Church, Otorohanga, on Tuesday evening. Mr and Mrs Tozer have foi the past 25 years been prominently associated with the local Methodist Church. Tho Rev. H. W. Payne presided. /The following contributed items during the evening: Mr H. E. Walters (Ngahape), Miss Walters (Rangiatea), Messrs B. Millward and C. Rogers (Kio Kio). Mrs F. W. Walters, president of the Ladies’ Guild, presented Mrs Tozer with a beautifully bound copy of the new Methodist hymnal, and Mr G. D. Hall, on behalf of the congregation, presented her with a xylonite dressing table set, and to Mr Tozer a modern fireside chair. Eulogistic references were made to the guests of the evening by Mr J. Hodson (for the trustees), and Mr H. C. Walters for the congregation. Beautiful seasonal bouquets were presented to Mrs Tozer by Mrs Holt and Miss June Tutty. Mr and Mrs Tozer expressed appreciation of the remarks made regard ing their past willing services in church matters. The proceedings closed with the singing of “Old Lang Syne.” SOCIAL AT PAEWHENUA. THE THOMAS FAMILY. The local hall at Paewhenua was packed on the occasion of the public farewell to the Thomas family, who are leaving the district 'after a residence of 23 years. The function took the form of a social and dance, the music being provided for the dancers by Mr C. Young’s orchestra. Mr P. D. Crowley, riding member on the Otorohanga County Council, on behalf of the settlers, expressed the regret of all at losing the popular family from their midst. Mr McDowell then presented a very substantial cheque to Mrs Thomas, and also presented each member ot the family with valuable souvenirs of their long residence at Paewhenua. The supper arrangements were on a lavish scale, and were provided by the ladies of the district. FOR ANOTHER BRIDE. AFTERNOON AT ROTO-O-RANGI. Prior to her marriage, Miss Tosti Banks was the guest of honour at a jolly afternoon given at the home of Mrs A. R. Cox, Roto-o-rangi. Large bowls of pink camellias and foliage in rich autumn tonings artistically decorated the rooms. An amusing competition, won by Miss Peter Gorrie, helped to make the time pass pleasantly. A frock of mulberry crepe was chosen by the hostess, Mrs Cox, Mrs P. W. Suckling was wearing a London tan woollen suit, and Miss Margaret Cox, who also assisted her mother, wore a rust coloured wool suit relieved with hunters’ green. The guest of honour wore a smart blue costume with navy toque.

FAREWELL SOCIAL. HANGATIKI SEND-OFF. Some 200 settlers forgegathered in the Hangatiki Hall the other evening to farewell Mr and Mrs Lereculey and Mr E. Meredith, who are leaving the district after a long residence. A social hour was followed by dancing, and monologue entertainment. Mr and Mrs Lereculey were the recipients of a very valuable silver te.i service, and Mr Meredith was presented with a chiming clock, as mementoes of their stay at Hangatiki. Various settlers spoke appreciatively of the guests of the evening.
