NEW ARRIVALS

MR AND MRS A. R. HILL, CAMBRIDGE. New arrivals in Te Awamutu are Mr and Mrs Alan R. Hill, formerly of Cambridge and Auckland. Mr Hill, who is a barrister and solicitor, has gone into partnership with Mr James Oliphant, the well known Te Awamutu lawyer. Mr Hill received his education at the Auckland Grammar School, and went on from there to the Auckland University College, where he studied law, obtaining his LL.B, degree and being duly admitted as a barrister and solicitor. During this period he was articled to the well known legal firm of Messrs Oliphant and Munro (then Ray and Oliphant), obtaining a wide practical experience in all aspects of legal work.

Following this, Mr Hill was appointed associate to Sir Alexander Herdman, which post enabled him to receive practical and first-hand experience in common law and in court work generally, a branch of the profession which has always particularly appealed to him. On Judge Herdman’s retirement from the Bench Mr Hill continued for two years as associate to Mr Justice Northcroft, which appointment he relinquished to go to Cambridge. While at the Auckland University Mr Hill was active in the social life of the college, taking a prominent part in the debating and dramatic work; and for three years was vicepresident of the Students’ Association. He also gained his college “blue” in the athletic field, representing his university in distances of 880 yards and upwards. , During their 18 months’ residence in Cambridge (where Mr Hill was associated with the firm of Kingsford and Gerrard) both lie and Mrs Hill took an active part in local affairs. Mr Hill is secretary of the National Party for the Waikato, which has its headquarters at Cambridge. Mrs Hill, who is an associate of the London College of Music (Elocution), was secretary of the Cambridge Literary and Dramatic Society for some time.
