LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

THIRD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. AT KIHIKIHI. A COMBINED “FATHERS’ NIGHT.” A large representative gathering assembled at the Town Hall, Kihikihi, on griday evening, May 27, to celebrate the third annual birthday of the Kihikihi branch of the League of Mothers, Tokanui branch joining in with Kihikihi and making it a combined “Fathers’ Night.” The proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Mrs McGhie, president of the Kihikihi Branch, then welcomed all visitors and branch members from other districts, and a special welcome was tendered to Mrs Hyams, president of the Grey Lynn Branch of the League. Mrs Barnett, district organiser and president of Tokanui branch endorsed Mrs McGhie’s welcome and enlarged on the aims and objects of the League of Mothers.

A very interesting and appreciated programme was rendered by the following artists: Mrs Sullivan of Te Awamutu, a song; Mr Barrett, saxophonist, who gave by special request, “The Scottish Songs Medley”; Mrs W. McCready, song and humorous elocutionary item; a Boy Blue ballet by the Tokanui children; Ethne Wyllie, Irish jig; Miss N. Old. song; Mrs Middlebrook, song, Miss Willocks, elocutionist and Mrs Flower, songs. These items were all very much enjoyed and called for encores. A playette “A March Wedding,” was next contributed, the following taking part: Misses Mary Eyre, Moyra Wyllie, Betty Donaldson, Marjorie and Gwen Crook, Sylvia Penny and Boris Pattison.

The above items were interspersed with musical arms and a relay game for the kiddies, which caused a great deal of amusement to all.

A presentation of a travelling cushion was made to Mrs F. Barnett (who is leaving the district), by the Ngahape and Kihikihi branches. Mrs McGhie, on making the presentation on behalf of both branches, spoke of the splendid work achieved by Mrs Barnett as district organiser. Mrs G. Barnett, of Tirau, suitably replied on Mrs Barnett’s behalf. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mesdames Hyams, Barnett and McGhie.

A dainty supper was served by the ladies, followed by the cutting of the Birthday cake, which was iced in the League’s colours, blue and gold. The candles were lit by Mrs Moody, the oldest member. Mrs Hyams, before blowing the candles out, gave the toast of the evening, Mrs Barnett cutting the cake. Mrs S. Wyllie. Tokanui. tendered thanks to the Kihikihi branch for combining with them in celebrating “Fathers’ Night,” which had been thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mrs McGhie returned thanks to one and all for their help and services in making the evening a general success. Mr R. P. Robinson. assisted by Messrs A. S. and H. W. Wyllie, capably officiated as M.’s C. Apologies were received from the Te Rore branch who were unable to be present.
