SPORTING NOTES
THE FRANKLIN MEETING. WINTER SEASON’S CURTAINRAISER. (By “ Backwood.”) The rain of the present week must make conditions at the Franklin Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow at Pukekohe by no means ideal for outdoor assemblies, but there is sure to be a large attendance at this popular Club's meeting, which has attracted good fields in all events. Proceedings will open with the Pukekawa Hack Handicap, a little over seven furlongs, and the best supported may be Prival, Dragon Moth, and perhaps Mai de Mer. The Hack Hurdles has a very large field, including many novices, and though Celtic Lad and one or two others have attractive performances for this class of event, the large number of novices may interfere with these in the running. It is not a race to bet upon with any confidence, and in a wide range of choice perhaps favouritism will lie with High Star. Golden Spahi, and My Money. The Otaua Handicap, a sprint for novice hacks, may see Senacre and Cintrace best supported. The latter is Te Awamutu-owned, and a win would be very popular. , The ten furlongs President’s Handicap has a dozen useful sorts engaged, and in a good betting race there may be a preference for Rona Bay, Grateful and Tybalt, with Light Comedy most likelv to surprise. The Onewhero Steeplechase about 2i miles has Windsor Lad top weight with 11.7 and if he wins he will deserve the nice stake- A couple that appeal much more are Saint Musk and Mio Lume with Lucidus and Kin-
kle as other factors needing consideration. The Hack Cup nine furlongs has Loombination carrying No. 1 saddlecloth and he is entitled to support. Most opposition may come from Gay Streak, Alyth, and Vaalso, with a preference for Alyth. The Paerata Handicap, six furlongs, is for open-class sprinters, and Tosh, with 8.13, should be solidly supported, and others in demand will assuredly be Sir Abb, May Song, and Crooning. Rona Bay and Miss Lu have earlier engagements, but if reserved their chances of. success should not be overlooked.
