SOCIAL FUNCTIONS
BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED. An interesting little ceremony took place lasi. Friday evening, when Mr L. G. Armstrong and his staff assembled to bid farewell to Miss L. Morrow, the cashier to tire firm, who lias resigned in view of her approaching marriage. Mr Armstrong referred to the long and efficient service rendered by Miss Morrow, her conscientious attention to her duties and universal popularity, and he wished her to accept a tangible token of goodwill for her future. Mr E. W. White voiced the staff's good wishes also, and said her resignation would sever many pleasant ties, tor Miss Morrow had always been esteemed and respected by her fellow workers. He asked her to accept a suitable gift from them, accompanied by hearty congratulations and goodwill. Miss Morrow made an appropriate acknowledgment.. BIRTHDAY BRIDGE PARTY. The many friends of >Mrs Marion Dawson, of College Street, tendered her a surprise bridge party on Wednesday evening, and it was not long before the tables were arragned for play. At the end of a very pleasant evening Mrs Downes, on behalf of the assembled guests, presented Mrs Dawson with an electric hot-water jug, the guest of honour suitably responding. « The bridge prizes, which were also presented by Mrs Downes, were won by Mrs A. J. McGovern and Mrs F. L. Dunn.
The invited guests to the function included Mesdames B. A. Downes, J. Oliphant, E. Potts, Griffiths, F. Quin, W. Mackenzie, J. P. O’Sullivan, C. F. Storey, W. Jeffery, Potter (Auckland), A. J. McGovern, W. P. Locke, H. C. Rainey, H. Mandeno, L. Teasdale, F. L. Dunn, J. B. W. Roberton, D. Bockett, A. G. Warburton, Bluck, A. L. Storey, L. G. Armstrong, W. J. North, W. 1). McCurdie, Heath, H. A. Burchell, J. A. Hawkins, Battson, F. W. Bovin, S. A. Empson, A. Bond, C. W. Rickit, F. C. Shutte, and A. A. Reese, and Misses S. Empson, M. Hayward, McLeod, Focke, Mudie (Wellington), A. Hawke, Elliott, and Burke.
COMING-OF-AGE PARTY'. Miss Enid Palmer was accorded a surprise party a few evenings ago at the home of Mr and Mrs L. J. Kerr, C >llege Street, the occasion marking Miss Palmer’s twenty-first birthday. Games and dancing were indulged in by the assembled guests, and congratulations to the guest of the evening were heartily expressed. Much-en-joyed musical numbers were contributed by the'Misses R. and G. Bell, and at supper, where a beautiful birthday cake (sent from Dannevirke by Miss Palmer’s parents) was a feature. Miss M. Hansard very ably proposed the toast of the guest 'of the evening, and heartily congratulated her upon attaining her majority. Miss. Palmer, who was accorded musical honours, suitably replied. ST. JOHN’S SOCIAL. The second of the monthly parish socials of St. John’s 'Church was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening, when a very entertaining programme was arranged by the Girls’ Club. A feature was a playette, “Tea-time Tempest,” with Mrs M. G. Sullivan and Misses E. Palmer, M. Hansard, G. Garvey, L. Cruickshank, and G. Ryburn taking the parts. A very effective wand drill was also given by Misses K. Kerr, F. Germann E. Palmer, and M. Hansard. The audience was very appreciative. A proverbs competition was won by Miss Tippler. Games and dancing made the rest of the evening pass very pleasantly.
