THE SCULLING SWEEPSTAKES.
London, August 30. The first heat in the sculling sweepstakes of £200 each, with £500 added, was rowed to-day on the Thames over the couree between Wandsworth and Hammersmith. Three events were rowed, and resulted as follows : — First Event. Neil Matterson ... ... ... ... 1 Wallace Ross ... ... ... ... 2 Second Event. Teemer ... ... ... ... ... 1 G. Perkins 2 Thikd Event. Beach 1 Lee 2 Bubear had a bye in this heat.
London, August 30. Ross was leading by two lengths at Hurlingham, when he suddenly collapsed. The course was from Wandsworth to Hamersmith. Teemer's course was from Ham mere mi th to Ke.v, and Beach's from Kew to Hammersmith. Off Mortlake Leo purposely fouled Beach, who continued rowing, winning easily, and without an effort. Mnttereon won his race with Ross by five lengths, and Teemer that with Perkins by three. Bubear will be Beach's next opponent. The latest betting is 100 to 90 against Beach, o to 2 Teemer, 4 to 1 Matfcereon, 8 to 1 Bubear. Perkins desires to row Matterson on Saturday. August 31 . The second heat was rowed to-day, and resulted as follows :—: — Beach beat Bubear. Teemer beat Mattereon.
