CARNIVAL AT UTIKU.

A MONEY-RAISING CONCERT,

A concert took place in Doole’s Hall. Utiku, cn Thursday evening, the proceeds being in support of the “Farmers’ Queen,” Mrs. Gilchrist. Mr. Gilchrist presided and introduced the performers, avlio, with two exceptions, were residents of Taihapo. Mr. Walsh opened the procodings Avith a stirring patriotic recitation, followed by Mrs. S. Peyton, of Taihapo, who played a piano solo in her usual brilliant style. Much of the success of the concert was due to Mrs. Peyton, whose playing of the accompaniments gave an added charm to the various items. Messrs. Kite (Utiku), Walker, and Powell (Taihape), gave songs, which received the approA-al of the audience, encores being demanded in each case. Messrs. 'Nathan and McSwocnoy gave recitations and their rendering of their items showed them to be first-class reciters. Mr. Stanley Peyton, an old favourite -with Utiku audiences, supplied the comic element. Air. Peyton sang four songs; his appearance each titme .was the signal for appJause, for the audience knew that they Avcre in for something good. His singing, in character, of “The Spaniard who blighted my life” meeting with especial favour. ’ldic Taihape Spoof and, composed of Messrs. Peyton, Do Latour, Nathan.Walker, McSwecncy, and Powell, and Masters Peyton and Poavcll, then made, their first appearance in Utiku, and to say that they “took on” with the adience is to dra’w it mildly. Their selections of popular and patriotic airs greatly pleased the audience. The gems of the evening. Avere those given by three lads. Master Jim Walsh, of Pahiatua, who, though only 101 years of age, has already Avon 21 first prizes for reciting, gave a “Story of lioav an Irishman got a situation by his Wit.” Master Walsh is the possessor of a good speaking voice, coupSed with a knowledge of elocution, that is surprising in one so young. His item was deservedly encored. Two sports from town, in the persons of Masters S. Peyton and J. Hay, then gave an item, and on being encored sang “Here we are again.” adding a special appeal for coin for “Tom, Dick, Harry, and Joe.” the result being that £1 15/ was thrown on the stage. A cake giVon by Airs. Poweß, of Taihape, realised £5 i’l/. Flowers, etc., wore sold and realised a goodly sum. Air. Gilchrist thanked the performers for their entertainment, which Avaa endorsed by the gathering. The Committee oavo their thanks to Airs. Phillips, who kindly lent her piano for the occasion.
