CELEBRATIONS AT PLYMOUTH. Bv Cable-—Press Association. — CovtjrioM. (A. & X.Z.) LONDON. Sept. 5. The Mayflower celebrations at Plymouth opened brilliantly. There were several notable American guests. The festivities include religious, musical and historical functions, and a procession and pageant through the streets. SERVICES IN CHRISTCKURCH. Several Ckristehureh churches yesterilay held special services in lionotir of the Mayflower tercentenary. The Rev. J. J. North preached at the" Oxford Terrace Baptist Church at both morning ami evening services, his subjects being "The Bond that Held the Pilgrim Fathers—the Romance of the Mayflower," and "How 102 Religions Outlaws Founded the Modern World.'' The prea-her emphasised that the Pilgrim Fathers were the roat pioneers of democracy. The morning service at Trinitv Congregational Church was conducted by the Rev. W. H. A. Viekery, whose subject was "The Pilgrims' Covenant." The Row Clyde Carr preached an interesting sermon at the evening service on "Pioneers of Freedom." He paid a tribute to the memory of John Robinson, through rwhose stirring preaching the little community was inspired to undertake its journey to an unknown world. Mr Carr stated that among the pilgrims there was an ideal relationship between the pastor and the church, and this had made the westward tra.k of the Mayflower plain. Special services were also held at the Tennyson Street Congregational Church, when Mr G. E. Franklin spoke, and at the Linwood Congregational Church, when the services were taken by the Rev. Clyde Carr and Mr Henry Srurge. A parade of Boy Scouts was held at the morning service.

A united commemoration service will be held this evening in the Trinity Congregational Church, Worcester Street. The meeting will be held under the auspices of the Congregational Union and the Council of Churches. The Rev. W. J. Williams will preside. Addresses will be given by the Rev. J. J. North, "The Puritans of Old England''; the Rev. W. H. A. Viekery, '' The Story of the Mayflower"; the Rev. Dr Erwin, "The Spirit of Puritanism in History." A recitation, "The Pilgrim Fathers,"" will be given by the Rev. J. Paterson.
