GARDEN PARTY AT MERIVALE HOUSE.

• This afternoon a very successful igarden party was held "at MerivaJe j House, the resilience of Mrs A. F. Carey, in aid of the Y.M.C.A. Fund for Trench Comforts. There was an excellent attendance, and very charming and picturesque looked the laden stalls, dotted about in the pretty spacious grounds. Striped awnings, flags, and gaily-col-oured decorations gave an air of carnival to the scene, and a string band supplied topical selections during the afternoon. Mr an<l Mrs Carey, with the aid of relatives and friends, left nothing undone that could possibly conduce to the success of the party, and all plans and arrangements went off without a hitch. A* number of children, dressed in white sailor costumes, danced round the Maypole on the lawn during the afternoon, and there were numerous side shows and other attractions. A tea tent, supei vised by Mrs C. Chilton for the Ladies Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., did a brisk trade, and the same may b< said of the strawberries and cream stall (Mrs Ower and Mrs J. Smith Wilson), and ice cream stall (Mrs Newburgh and Mrs Woodford;. A pretty and tempting looking sweet stall was under the charge of Mrs Reynolds Carey, Mrs Rodger, Mrs Summers, • and Miss Bowron.
