BRILLIANT DEEDS.
ANZACS DO WELL. SMOOTHNESS OF ADVANCE. Renter's Telegrams. LONDON, October 3. Mr W. Beach Thomas gives a continuous record, individual and corporate, of the brilliant deeds of the New Zealandcrs. lie says they were particularly successful in the breaking of old German trenches, and states that they were officially complimented recently on the quickness and smoothness of their chief advance.
Scores of stories are told of their daring.
One sergeant, it is said, snaked his way lo a machine gun emplacement, bayoneted every member of the crew, and used the gun to the greatest effect against the enemy. "Continually during (he advance," Mr Beach Thomas remarks, "we have been putting out of action many German batteries. Never previously have the enemy's gunners so suffered, our direct hits repeatedly smashing their batteries which are frequently seen lying broken under twisted girders." There have been many instances of the German fright referred to in the Bavarian order of the day. They are now largely increasing, particularly in the form of wild rifle fire I and useless bomb-throwing.
