! MEETING OF COUNCIL. '■ The fortnightly meeting of the Woolston Borough Council was held last ! night, there being present: The Mayor ; (Mr J. J. Graham) and Crs W. Fuller, L. Hart, C. Hill, G. Lilley, J. Hobson, 1 F. Newton, D. MeKae, and J. B. Richardson. The Works Committee recommended that permission be given a number of 1 residents to connect with the water ' supply, conditional upon the work being approved by the borough foreman, and ' the applicants agreeing to disconnect when a high-pressure supply is available ';in Woolstou. The report was approved. ' The report of the Electrical Committee was discussed by the council in committee, and it was decided that a special meeting should be held on Thurs- • day evening, to'deal with the question . of accepting tenders for electrical supplies. The Finance Committee recommended , that proceedings be taken for the ret eovery of arrears of rates due for i 101415. • The recommendation was en- • dorsed. ' The Sanitation Committee recommended that copies of the analysis of trade effluent running into the river i be sent to the Health Inspector, and that he be asked to report; also that , the inspector be asked to meet the • council on a date to be fixed. The report was approved. ■ The Christchurch City Council wrote, forwarding a copy of a letter received from the Belgian Committee, with re- ■ ferenee to the local bodies contributing to the Canterbury quota. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. The Public, Works Department wrote, enquiring whether the draft license aui thorising the council to insta'l electricity was satisfactory. It was decided to reply in the affirmative. The Christchurch Beautifying Association wrote, asking the council to consider the advisability of laying out wide footpaths in purely residential areas, so that the carriage-way may not be wider than is actually required for the traffic, and that the space between the asphalt footpath and the fence may be laid down in grass in such a way that it can easily be cut by the residents; also that, before dealing with any particular district, an effort be made to secure the approval and co-operation of the local residents, so that they may look upon the street alongside their property as their especial care. Commenting on the letter, the Mayor sai.l that it had his approval. Woolstou had tried the idea in Till'ord Street with eminently satisfactory results, and ihe would like to see it more widely resorted to. The letter was referred to 'the Works Committee. The Hospital Board wrote, asking for a cheque for the council's contribution. The Finance Committee recommended I that £75 be paid, and the recommenda[tion was adopted. I The Woolstou Band wrote, asking permission to give an open-air concert in the Domain, anil to take up a collection in aid of the Soldiers' Queen section. After some discussion it was decided to 'give permission. The Drainage Board wrote, asking for a statement of all rates collected, and those collected and not paid, due to the board; also that in future a monthly statement and payment of accounts be made by the council to the board. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. it was decided to write to Mi F. Ham ilton, who had filled the position of temporary clerk during the Town Clerk's illness, thanking him for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his duties. Accounts amounting to £649 17/11 i were passed for payment.
