WATERSPOUTS.
DAMAGE IN OTAGO. Press Association. DUNEDIN, February 1. Following on the extremely hot weather, disastrous waterspouts yesterday afternoon swept over the lower regions of Clyde and the Cromwell Gorge. One spout struck the high country on the hill about Champagne Bill's Cutting, on the Otago Central Railway, and extended right down to the Clyde Flat, which now presents an awe-inspiring spectacle. Desolation was wrought on the property of Mr Doig, orchardist, portion of whose house was swept away. A large area of his orchard has been smothered with large stones and debris. The railway line has been seriously damaged, and also the main road, while the telegraph lines to Cromwell are down in several places, cutting off communication and suspending traffic from Cromwell. It is a serious matter for wool growers, orchardists, and farmers.
