XMAS EVE IN WELLINGTON
SOLDIERS "CAUGHT ON THE HOP."
INSUFFICIENT ACCOMMODATION
Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 26. Christmas Day passed off quietly in Wellington. Christmas Eve saw the usual large crowds of people in the streets, and business generally was as brisk as ever. About 5 o'clock a heavy downpour of rain came almost in a moment and caught people unprepared, but despite this the holiday throngs seemed determined to make the best of things. There was a very large influx of soldiers from the various camps, more than accommodation could be found for. Throughout the city men ranged in search of beds, but many had to wander the streets all night. The Defence people made shakedowns for as many as came along to the barracks. > Despite discomforts, everyone accepted the situation philosophically, seeming glad to be out of camp for a brief spell.
