MOTOR LAUNCH ABLAZE.
A PERILOUS ADVENTURE.
Press Association
WELLINGTON, December 26.
The motor launch Rapier, said to be the fastest motor launch in Wellington, was towing a waterplane in the harbour yesterday, when the engine backfired, with the result that the tank, holding about a tin of petrol, became ablaze.
Efforts were made to smother the flames without success, and the occupants had an exciting experience, being driven by the heat over the side of the craft into the water. They were rescued by a cutter from the Monowai. The hull of the motor launch was practically destroyed, the damage being estimated at £IOO.
