A PUFF OF SMOKE.

HOSPITAL BOARD TROUBLE. A small cloud of smoke rising in one corner of the room, ruffled some members ■of the Hospital Board at; yesterday's meeting. The Hon. R. Moore drew the attention of the chairman that a member of the board was smoking a pipe, and asked if such conduct were permissible. He thought it was rather unseemly at a meeting of such a body as the board, especially as ladies were present. (Several members: Hear, hear.) Mr W. Tanner said that he was clearly the culprit, but by way of explanation he wished to say that three or four years ago he had asked the chairman for permission to smoke, and had obtained it. He had often smoked since, and no objection was made. He noticed that even then another member was preparing to smoke. (Laughter.) The chairman (Mr F. Horrell) .said that he had noticed members smoking Mf different times, but he had never heard the practice objected to. Perhaps it wouM.bc better jf members did not smoke. Members: Get on with the business.

'Mr Tanner (sharply) : My pipe is in my' pocket now. >The board proceeded to the next business. • • .. ,
